Country Western 2013 Style

Country Western music is probably my favorite, but then I can’t think of many types of music that I don’t like. That said, Saturday night I counted at least 6 pair of boots on the stage and 3 Cowboy hats, along with a wild & wooly fiddle and drum playing the Orange Blossom Special…. that brought many in the audience to their feet in applause and praise for Rodgers Cochran and Rick Burton. That always make for some great Country Western music.

Our guest stars were Jabbo Cannon and Laura Leigh Clifton, both carrying on the “country torch” in great style. Laura Leigh is a powerful young vocalist with a rich alto voice and lovely auburn hair (John Ray said that was her “Reba hair”). Laura picked some very interesting songs for last night; songs that can be a bit tricky like “If I Die Young”, by the Band Perry, and a great Fleetwood Mac song, “Landslide”. Laura Leigh is 19 so we’re going to have many years ahead listening to her sing. Jabbo, was the first male guest star to ever perform at the Liberty Opry 19 + years ago, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He’s more traditional in his choices of country songs, “Statue of a Fool”, first release in 1969 by Jack Greene and became a #1 hit for Brian Collins in 1974. What a great song and a favorite of many singers over the years. “Six Days on the Road” from the ‘60’s, and ” I Don’t Need your Rockin’ Chair’” from the ‘90’s both great songs for Jabbo’s voice.

The members of the Liberty Opry Band and cast are such a professional bunch of guys & gals, no slouches when it comes to their vocal numbers too. John Ray Baxter picked a rather deep song to do, actually called “Down Deep” by Lee Roy Parnell, not only could you hear it, but you could feel John Ray talking to God. And of course Jerry & I enjoyed dancing to another Ann Murray song, “ I Just Fell in Love Again” by Lainie Shearer. Thanks for asking Lainie.
I’m sorry so many had to miss the show as it was excellent in many regards however many of our regular members in the audience were absent due to illness. 2013 has started off with so many of us suffering with flu, colds, bronchitis, pneumonia and sinus infections…thoughts & prayers go out to all of you. I’m happy to say that Jerry & I are pretty much on the mend.
